Leading dental technicians and labs, like Terry Whitty from Sydney's Fabdent Dental Laboratory, have switched to Dentaurum Zirconia, ceraMotion® Z. Why? It all boils down to good business sense.
We sat down with Terry and asked him about Fabdent, digital dentistry, what he likes most about Dentaurum zirconia and why he decided to change.
"The way digital dentistry is now is amazing because we can manipulate data with software in ways that could never have been before. It wasn't that long ago that 40% of data came to us through digital intraoral scanning. It's now more like 90%. " Says Terry.
With the rise of digital dentistry, the demand for high-quality, well-made, fit-for-patient output has exploded
To keep up with demand, labs like Fabdent must produce high-strength, durable solutions that are fit for purpose and highly aesthetic. They must do so with machine-like efficiency.
Selecting suitable raw materials is critical, as labs rely on quality and consistency for their reputation and the efficiency of their high-performing workflows.
While clinicians and their patients expect faultless quality, durability, fit and comfort, crowns' aesthetic quality makes the most significant difference. Patients expect dental restorations to match the natural appearance of their teeth, so the zirconia needs to have the right colour, layering and translucency without compromising strength.

Terry Whitty prefers the hybrid zirconia
'With zirconia, you have two main types of material. You have the high aesthetic material, which is the high translucent material. These have a flexural strength of around 600 megapascals".
"Then you've got the lower translucent materials with flexural strengths of about 1000 megapascals".
"Then you've got the transient ones, which combine both. So, you may have the high strength zirconia on the lower layers, and in the higher layers, you have the high aesthetic or high translucent zirconia. So, they're like a hybrid. They're the ones I like to use."
"What's happened to us with the ceraMotion® Z products from Dentaurum is that our customers are really noticing the difference. We were using other zirconia brands, but now, after we changed without telling the customers, they're coming back to us and saying how good they're looking - their aesthetics."
"It's amazing how many of our customers are commenting on the zirconia we're using, which is Dentaurum ceraMotion® Z. The workflow doesn't change in any way, but you just get better results."
ceraMotion® Z has been refined by the relentless pursuit of technical perfection that customers expect of Dentaurum.
The six different ceraMotion® Z blanks cover all zirconium oxide-based indications and offer maximum reliability in shading and processing. The ceraMotion® Z zirconia blank range totals 165 products, available in heights from 14mm – 25mm.
ceraMotion® Z Hybrid | A multi-shaded, multi-layered zirconium oxide that provides a genuinely multi-use material. It combines the aesthetics of 1,000 MPa zirconium oxide with the strength of highly translucent zirconium oxide in one blank. It offers pure aesthetics and is suitable for all anterior and posterior work |
ceraMotion® Cubic Multishade | Provides ultra-high translucence and multi-shading for inlays, veneers, single crowns and 3-unit bridges. With a translucency of 49%, the restoration displays natural light dynamics after sintering |
ceraMotion® Z HR Multishade | Provides high-strength and high translucence with multi-shading. A biaxial strength of 1,200 MPa is achieved, providing maximum safety from single crowns to multi-element restorations or implant sub-structures |
ceraMotion® Z HT Shade | Provides 1,200 MPa biaxial strength, high translucency across all V-Classic shades |
ceraMotion® Z HT White | Provides 1,200 MPa biaxial strength with high translucency. It makes an ideal framework for classic veneering |

Customers are happy with the look and satisified customers means more business
It also pays to invest in the best materials because there's business value in doing so.
Terry gives a great example: "When we're making a crown, we have to look at our input cost. If I'm paying a little bit more and getting a better product, I'm actually winning. Then, from a clinical perspective, the clinic's winning, too, because they're getting a better product and their patients are happy. It's a high-quality product. It's just aesthetically superior."
Dentaurum delivers
Terry discusses his relationship with Dentaurum and their exceptional local customer service.
"The relationship that Dentaurum and I have had has always been one that I'm very proud to have when you've got a company that makes such great products. Plus, I can communicate with them. They listen to me. So when I talk about something I need or want to improve, the company listens to me. So I think we have a great relationship."
