Dr Joseph Kazzi, Bexley Dental: Of and for his community

Joseph Kazzi was born and raised in Earlwood. As a seven-year-old child, he started as a patient of Dr Theo Spyrakis, Principal Dentist at Bexley Dental. Today, Dr Kazzi sees Dr Spyrakis daily in his capacity as an associate dentist at the same practice. It’s a remarkable community story.

Dr Kazzi began work as an Oral Health Therapist at Bexley Dental sixteen years ago. He later graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Dental Science.

Bexley Dental is a successful and progressive practice that has embraced further education and training to expand the range of dental services. Its five practising dentists combine to provide Family Dentistry, Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Dr Kazzi operates largely in Orthodontics. He enjoys the challenge of building effective relationships with his young patients and their parents through his orthodontic practice. “I always think of myself as a big kid, and I try to create a fun environment. The aim is to get the kids on board. If they like me, I know they’re much more likely to work with me and do what I ask, so we get the results together in the shortest possible time”.

“No matter the patient's age, our relationships as practitioners are vital. I’ve lived in this area my whole life and am part of this community. I want the best for it”.

“It’s immensely satisfying to see the results of our work. In Orthodontics, we help with patients' physical and mental health. The core purpose is to improve dental health by creating an ideal and aligned bite. But the benefits also extend physically into the quality of breathing and even diet. Sometimes, the most striking can be the treatment's impact on people’s confidence. The confidence to smile can have a transformational effect on a person’s outlook on life”.

Patient: Blake, male, mid-twenties

Clinical indication: Malocclusion and severe crowding

Situation: The patient had a job with a public profile. The patient felt very uncomfortable with his smile due to the crowding, which made him reserved and less outgoing when working with others and in social situations.

Treatment: A course of braces to align teeth, correct bite, and create a pleasing visual appearance.

Treatment period: 2.5 years, slowed by approximately six months by the impact of COVID-19 practice limitations.
